Why Goal Setting is So Important for Entrepreneurs
Do you ever feel like you’re working your butt off, but you don’t always see the results you expected?
Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy — you wear a lot of hats and you’re constantly juggling a lot of moving parts.
And it’s easy to get so lost in the hustle that you don’t always realize that you’ve been busy, but you haven’t been productive.
But the reason you aren’t being productive is that you’re trying to do it all.
Instead, you should be focusing on strategic goal setting that will move your business forward.
You need to get clear on what you need to do, how you need to do it, and when you need to do it by.
So today, I’m going to talk to you about why it’s so easy for entrepreneurs to become overwhelmed by everything going on.
Then I’ll talk a little about what strategic goal setting is and why it’s so important.
And finally, we’ll dive into how you can take action and start implementing some strategic goals for yourself!

Why Entrepreneur’s Get Overwhelmed
We Have a Ton of Great Ideas
As entrepreneurs, we’re ideas people. And we’re passionate. And it’s really easy for us to become super passionate about all of our amazing ideas.
But I want you to consider something.
If you’re spreading all of your time and energy between 50 different amazing ideas, then each of them can only get about 2% of your time.
But, if you take the time to pinpoint the exact things that you need to focus on and methodically work through each one of them, then those things will get 100% of your time.
And that’s exactly what strategic goal setting is all about.
It’s about getting clear on the message you want to put out into the world — on what you want your business to accomplish — and then setting goals that perfectly align with that.
Then, you narrow your focus to one goal at a time, break it down into an action plan, and schedule it all in.
This is how you beat the overwhelm and start seeing real results right away.
We Easily Fall Victim to Multitasking
Another thing to point out is that multitasking is killing your productivity.
And that’s no exaggeration.
I’m more of a gut check type of person than a numbers person (it’s just my personality type!), but this stat on multitasking is a number that I couldn’t afford to ignore.
Gerald Weinberg conducted a study on how much time you waste switching from one task to another. And he found that on average, it takes about 20% of the time spent on the next task to actually get your brain acquainted with what you’re working on.
In other words, if you spend 1 hour working on one project, and then another hour working on something else, you’re actually only spending about 48 minutes working on the second project, because you lost 12 minutes while your brain was switching gears.
So if you’re sitting at your desk working, and you’re constantly being distracted by your phone or your email or your crazy neighbor, you’re losing more than just the time you spent checking all of that.
You’re also losing the time that it took for your brain to switch back from the distraction.
Now consider this on a larger scale.
If you have multiple projects that you’re working on at one time, you’re losing valuable time switching back and forth between them.
And it isn’t sustainable to work this way.
What is Strategic Goal Setting & How it Helps
To fix this, you need to strategically choose one goal to work on at a time.
Then all the time can be applied to that one project.
Now, you won’t be wasting all that time, which will help you get the project done even faster.
And I promise you, this isn’t just some hypothetical hoopla.
This is the exact system that I use to get shit done.
I don’t have 8 hours a day at my desk to work on something. I have nap time, maybe a little time at night, and, if I’m lucky, a Saturday morning to work on everything I have going on.
But when I first started my business, I was all over the place. I was completely overwhelmed. And I didn’t get anything done.
I wasted so much time hopping from project to project, trying to publish a million things at once. But because I was doing that, I wasn’t really releasing anything. I was in perpetual creation mode. Not the perpetual launch mode I’m in now.
So I started to study everything I could on how to be more efficient. On how to be more strategic.
And I pieced it all together into the system I use today.
Goal Setting Boosts Your Productivity
But what are the actual benefits of strategic goal planning?
Well, the first is that it drastically boosts your productivity.
As I’ve already said, by focusing on one thing at a time, you will waste less time jumping back and forth between projects.
And you’ll start getting things done a lot faster as a result.
Goal Setting Motivates You
And do you know what happens when you start getting things done faster and seeing results quicker?
It motivates the hell out of you.
Even breaking the goal down into its different steps is motivating because it allows you to clearly see how simple the project really is to complete.
Goal Setting Keeps You on Track
Plus, breaking each project down into different steps helps you to stay on track.
You don’t have a massive to-do list of a million things to get done.
You have the next step in your project and a due date.
It doesn’t get more hit or miss than that.
Goal Setting Allows You To Measure Your Progress
And finally, because each project is broken down into action steps and given deadlines, it’s so easy to measure your progress.
You’ve either taken action on the step or you haven’t.
And you’ve either met the deadline or not.
And if you haven’t, it’s super easy to reflect on why not because you don’t have the weight of the entire project clouding your vision. Just this one step. So what happened?
